SURFER POLL RELOCATES TO NORTH SHORE FOR 40TH ANNIVERSARY
Surfer Magazine 31 Jul 2010, 12:49 am CEST

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., July 30, 2010 – After 39 years on the Mainland, SURFER Magazine is pleased to announce the 40th anniversary of SURFER Poll is being relocated to the Turtle Bay Resort on O’ahu’s North Shore, December 6, 2010, in conjunction with the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Helping to bring the event to this culturally significant location are presenting sponsors Verizon Wireless and Samsung.
“We’re really excited to be bringing SURFER Poll to the mecca of surfing during the most exciting month on the surf world’s calendar,” says SURFER Publisher Tony Perez. “We owe a lot of thanks to the incredible North Shore community, Verizon Wireless and Samsung, and to the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing for allowing us the opportunity to further enhance the prestige of SURFER Poll.”
“Moving SURFER Poll to the North Shore is a no-brainer,” says SURFER Editor-in-Chief Joel Patterson. “Hawaii is the heart of the surf community, and the Vans Triple Crown is the grand finale of our year…how could ‘the biggest night in surfing’ not be December 6th at the Turtle Bay Resort? And moving the event is giving us the opportunity to make some exciting changes and to think about the night from a new perspective.”
Each year, the SURFER Poll (the surf equivalent of the People’s Choice Awards meets the Academy Awards wrapped up into one raging party) crowns the Top 10 male and Top 5 female surfers as voted on by SURFER’s readers. Past Poll winners include:
Andy Irons, Stephanie Gilmore, Tom Curren, Lisa Andersen, and, of course, 15-time No. 1 Kelly Slater, to name a few. Online voting for 2010 will kick off in early August.
But the Poll is only half the night. The video awards show honors the best individual performances of the year as well as the best cinematography, heaviest wipeout, and the film of the year. And with the explosion of incredible web-exclusive surf filmmaking in the past few years, award categories have been added to recognize everything from the cutting edge of performance, to the great work of environmental and humanitarian champions, to surfing’s lighter side.
Along with all of the world’s top surfers in attendance each year, SURFER Poll also attracts an onslaught of notable personalities from the worlds of action sports, professional sports, movies, television and music.
Although the event is limited to invited guests only, fans the world-over can catch all of the action as it happens via a live webcast with behind-the-scenes and red-carpet reporting as well as exclusive interviews with the winners.
Special thanks to presenting sponsors, Verizon Wireless and Samsung, and additional supporters of the 2010 SURFER Poll: Suzuki Auto, Red Bull Surfing, Skullcandy, New Era, Peligroso Tequila, and the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.

Oceans and Art Converge on New Jersey’s LBI
Surfer Magazine 30 Jul 2010, 8:29 pm CEST
By Casey Butler
“People do this kind of thing in California all the time,” says Kristin Myers, “and it’s happened a couple of times in New York City, but anywhere else on the East Coast—it’s pretty much unheard of.”
Myers, gallery manager at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences (LBIF), is talking about an upcoming exhibition of ocean-related art. “It’s not surf art,” she adamantly says. “It’s just amazing art that’s driven by the ocean.”
“Where Oceans Converge,” which is completely exclusive to the gallery in Loveladies, N.J., seeks to unite not only LBI’s surf and art communities, but also the East and West Coasts. Myers explains that Julie Goldstein and her husband Mark Tesi were the first to try to do this.

Julie Goldstein's "Duck Diver"
“Being from LBI and being a surfer, I’ve always felt it was a necessity,” Goldstein says. She and Tesi joined forces with Farias Surf and Sport to found Pine Surf Shop and Gallery in the May of 2008. “The original concept for Pine was to connect the community to art and the ocean; to give the people of LBI a place to learn what we do as artists and surfers,” she says. “We really made it happen.”
The gallery exhibited work from both locally and California-based artists, along with some New York City street art.
Pine (and the precious art inside) burned down only six months later.
“Some of the artists lost several thousand dollars worth of art,” says Myers. “The insurance covered the building but it didn’t cover the artwork. It’s almost hard to talk about. What happened at that place was just a tragedy.”
On the evening of July 31st, LBIF will host a film, Hanging Five, and an auction to benefit the artists who lost work in the fire at Pine. Four of the artists featured in Hanging Five will have work on display at the LBIF gallery this month. Myers managed to secure some well-known names like Andy Davis, Kassia Meador, and Ty Williams for the show, which will be open to the public from July 28th until August 17th.
Goldstein says surfing occupies a very different place in Each Coast culture. “On the East Coast, surfing is so raw. The overall population does not connect to surfing as a culture. It’s more of a rebellious sport. I never understood this, since surfing creates camaraderie. In California, it is a part of the culture,” she says. She is thrilled that the show unites right and left coasters.
LBIF is also presenting Jersey-centric surf flicks (A Pleasant Surprise, Dark Fall) in conjunction with the exhibition. Myers hopes the films will draw a variety of local residents–especially those who don’t usually visit the gallery.
“You don’t have to go to New York—or any cities, really—you can see [quality art] right here on the island,” she says. For more information, visit “Where Oceans Converge” on Facebook.
Down With The Ship Premiere
Surfer Magazine 30 Jul 2010, 8:24 pm CEST
By Aaron Schall
It is a leader’s obligation, the hero’s modus operandi and a captain’s fate accompli. It is the determination to stick it out when things get tough, to see things through to the bitter end, and a willful stubbornness to seek success no matter the obstacle. It is a willingness to go Down with the Ship.
For big wave surfer and La Jolla son Derek Dunfee, Down With The Ship has become more than a catchphrase–rather it has evolved into a personal mantra, a recipe for success, and the title for his just released autobiographical movie.
On the evening of Thursday, July 29, an overflow crowd packed the Sherwood Auditorium at the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla, California to celebrate the premiere of Down With the Ship with Derek and his friends and family. Produced by Derek himself, edited by Ryan Broomberg and with the art by Taylor Dunfee, the movie outlines the events leading up to Derek’s crowning achievement–winning the 2009 XXL Monster Paddle award on an appropriately monstrous November wave at Mavericks. Backtracking not nearly as long as one should, considering the severity of the injury, the storyline unfolds finding its roots in the barrel at Cloudbreak. On one day out at Cloudbreak, Derek happens to be at the wrong spot at the wrong time. The lip caught Derek at an awkward moment, folding his body in a way not within the range of human flexibility, thus violently breaking his leg. From here it is a story of dedication–dedication to recovery, a new dedication to a healthier lifestyle, and a rededication to the worlds biggest rideable and paddle-able waves. An obviously far from 100 percent healthy, Derek is seen charging solid Puerto, as he insists on preparing himself mentally and physically for the upcoming big wave season of the Northern Pacific. Despite doctors concerns that the injury may not be sufficiently healed to withstand the terrible beatings routinely dished out on such a stretch of sand.
The rehabilitation a success and an early winter storm a more than willing participant, we once again bear witness to two of the most significant waves in Derek’s life. First, a terrible beating on a top to bottom wave that seems more fit for fiction and nightmares than for sport. Then with his knife-edge sharpened all the more from the experience, the following day’s XXL wave of waves.
With the receipt of the award, it is obvious that Derek has not become complacent and the film continues on to more recent events. Documenting the further pursuits of an elite core of big wave surfers who seek to paddle into waves that many called enormous. From well-known surfers like Greg and Rusty Long, Grant Baker, and Mark Healey to a poignant remembrance of Noel Robinson and to fellow La Jollan’s John Maher and JoJo Roper, the stage is set for Derek and friends to continue to expand the envelope of big wave paddle-in surfing.
The evening, which included a who’s who list of the tight knit and well-respected La Jolla surfing community, was a purposeful and rewarding success. With the money from a well-stocked raffle going straight to the Emerald Coast chapter of the Surfrider Foundation and its efforts to help with the gulf oil spill, the good vibes and good will emanated far beyond the theatre walls. Many thanks to Volcom, Matuse, Sector 9, Nixon, and Stu Kenson Surfboards for their contributions and helping to make this an evening of celebration and kinship, an evening spirited in giving, an evening not to soon be forgotten.
